West Ham have been strongly linked with a move for Guillermo Maripan this summer. According to The Sun, West Ham will launch a new £15m bid for the Deportivo Alaves defender.
Manuel Pellegrini wants fellow Chilean Maripan through the door. And with the Copa America coming up, West Ham want to get this deal wrapped up quickly.
The Hammers have already sold Lucas Perez to Alaves and this could be seen as a sweetener. Now, they want to finalise a deal to bring Maripan to England. And Alaves’ recent transfer activity suggests that a deal could happen soon.
Deportivo Alaves sign Olivier Verdon
Alaves have signed a new centre-back, suggesting Maripan is on his way. The La Liga club announced the arrival of Olivier Verdon on their official website.
Verdon joins from Sochaux. The 23-year-old played 30 times in Ligue 2 last season and will now be testing himself in the Spanish top-flight. He has signed a long-term deal with Alaves.
The Benin international has penned a three-year deal with the option for a further two years. It looks like Alaves have brought him in to replace exit-bound Maripan, who could now be heading to West Ham.
Guillermo Maripan: Where does he fit in?
If West Ham complete the signing of Maripan, he will join several other centre-backs on West Ham’s books. But it could lead to the departure of Winston Reid or Angelo Ogbonna.
Reid has been injured since March 2018 and there are concerns over his long-term fitness. Ogbonna might choose to leave if he is fourth-choice at West Ham.
Maripan would be tasked with replacing Issa Diop or Fabian Balbuena in the first-team. The 25-year-old, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, needs to replicate his La Liga form in England.
