Haller was bad but West Ham’s first choice Gomez has not fared much better

West Ham have made a formal bid for Independiente del Valle midfielder Moises Caicedo according to Ecuadorian journalist Jorge Pazmino.

The Hammers were first linked with a move to sign the 19-year-old Ecuadorian starlet at the end of last month by The Daily Record.

Reports claimed West Ham are in for Caicedo but face competition from Man United

The only problem was West Ham were facing competition from Manchester United.

That was until a new twist yesterday saw West Ham’s hopes rise and fall in one fell swoop.

First news emerged that Manchester United had been beaten to the punch by a Premier League club.

Hammers fans were desperately hoping it was them.

Particularly after Ecuadorian journalist Jorge Pazmino claimed West Ham had made a formal offer to acquire 70% of Moises Caicedo’s rights.

Hammers hopes rise as Man United are beaten by rival Prem side only for shock Brighton claim to emerge

But no sooner had West Ham fans got their hopes up than news filtered through that strugglers Brighton had ‘agreed a deal’ for the 19-year-old.

The Metro cites reports in Ecuador which claim the Seagulls have beaten both Manchester United and West Ham to the signing of Caicedo.

West Ham boss David Moyes has seen his transfer kitty boosted by the £20m sale of Sebastien Haller to Ajax.

Moyes is expected to spend most of that money on a replacement striker.

But with Caicedo valued at just £5.4m there may have been room for both in West Ham’s budget.

Haller sale sparks West Ham transfer rumour frenzy

West Ham may still have some hope until a deal is announced.

Caicedo is widely regarded as one of the best young midfield talents in South America and delivered several impressive performances in last year’s Copa Libertadores.

He is just one of no less than NINE players linked with a move to West Ham on the day the club sold Haller.

Whether they are genuine Moyes targets or agents picking up the scent on cash remains to be seen.
