West Ham United fans don’t know what to do with themselves this summer.

The appointment of Manuel Pellegrini and the arrival of what threatens to be over £100 million of new signings has filled the East London air with renewed optimism.

What supporters hope will be a new era comes after two seasons flirting with the relegation dogfight since the big move to the London Stadium.

It was meant to be so different, particularly given West Ham finished just four points off the Champions League places in their farewell season at Upton Park.

Owners David Sullivan and David Gold have responded to the growing unrest from fans in a positive way and some supporters are allowing themselves to dream of pushing at the right end of the table.

But former West Ham defender Matt Upson has delivered a dose of reality to his old club on Sky Sports’ The Debate, telling them to forget about the top six and instead focus on genuinely establishing themselves as a future force.

“Spent very big, have to say really actually surprisingly big,” Upson told The Debate.

“They’ve brought in some good players, obviously a new manager (but) I think after so many seasons of really scrapping it’s very difficult to envisage being anything different at times.

“Hopefully this manager will come in an instil that (winning mentality). They’ve brought in some players, they have some good young players as well, they’ve brought in the young centre back (Issa Diop), they’ve got Declan Rice there already and I just that they’ve got the possibility to build.

“To finish top six for me I think is completely unrealistic for them but hopefully they can get better and better and start to be more established and not always be looking behind them in a Premier League season and I think the supporters would really enjoy that to be honest.”
