West Ham United boss Manuel Pellegrini can finally get an answer from defensive target and fellow Chilean Guillermo Maripan.
Reports claimed the player was keen on a move to the Premier League with West Ham.
Maripan a target for compatriot Pellegrini
And when West Ham sold striker Lucas Perez to Maripan’s club Alaves it was believed to be a cunning move to grease the wheels.
But since then Maripan has refused to discuss his club future while away with Chile at the Copa America.
The rangy centre back has been one of the stars of the Copa with Chile.
Shock defeat clears path for West Ham
However they suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Peru in the semi-finals overnight.
As a result Maripan will now be free to get his club future settled.
West Ham cannot afford to rely on Winston Reid as back-up given his injury history as he looks to make a comeback after 18 months out.
Pellegrini’s defensive quandry
Angelo Ogbonna – wanted by Bologna, Roma and Torino – and Manchester United-linked Issa Diop have both been touted for moves away.
West Ham are not open to selling Diop but have put a £70million price tag on the young star’s head.
Speaking at the start of the week Maripan told Marca: “I do not know if it is time to change clubs. I am very comfortable at Deportivo Alaves and now I’m focused on the Copa America and the team.
“I’m not thinking about that (my future) until after the Copa America.”
That time has come so it will be interesting to see if there are any developments in the coming weeks.
