West Ham identified Gomez as the ideal replacement for Marko Arnautovic, according to various reports including The Express.

The 22-year-old has scored nine goals for relegation-threatened Celta Vigo this season and Manuel Pellegrini is a big fan.

Ahead of tonight’s deadline, West Ham were ready to pay around £40m to sign the Uruguay international and sent him back to Celta Vigo on loan, as per Sky Sports News.

But today’s reports suggest that West Ham will fail in their attempts to sign Gomez.

West Ham set to miss out on Maxi Gomez

According to ESPN’s live deadline day blog [10:16AM], West Ham are set to miss out on Gomez, even if they negotiate a deal in the summer.

This is because a host of other clubs have entered the race for the impressive striker, including Barcelona.

And TEAMtalk reports that this deal will not go ahead because of the wage demands that Gomez was commanding to move to East London.
