Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to bring the 29-year-old centre-back to Anfield according to Sky Sports.
Liverpool’s Premier League title defence has unravelled this season since Virgil van Dijk suffered a serious injury against Everton way back in October.
The Merseyside giants have had to make do without the likes of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Fabinho for sustained periods of time as well.

So it would be no surprise to see Liverpool move in for soon-to-be free agent Nikola Maksimovic in the summer.
It seems as though the Reds may well have their work cut-out if they are to sign the 25-capped Serbia international, however.
Ciro Venerato (as quoted via Area Napoli) has claimed that West Ham are on the trail of the towering Serb.
Meanwhile, Fichajes claims that the Hammers may well already have a deal in place to sign the Napoli centre-back.
David Moyes could be looking to bring an established centre-back to the London Stadium in the summer with Fabian Balbuena thought to be on his way out.

Liverpool facing blow with Nikola Maksimovic potentially on his way to West Ham
The Hammers have been flying this season. It’s not outside the realms of possibility that the Napoli centre-back will want to join us. Especially if we manage to achieve qualification for Europe.
It could be argued that he will have a far greater chance of playing more regular football at West Ham than he would Liverpool as well.
Jurgen Klopp will be concerned by the fitness of all fo his senior centre-backs heading into next season. Maksimovic would be a great addition for the Reds.
The 29-year-old is a grizzly, seasoned defender. He seems to be ideally suited to the robust and intense nature of the Premier League.
All the chatter seems to be that West Ham are closest to signing the Serbian, however. The Napoli defender is out of contract in the summer. And he would be a fine addition for the Hammers.
If Maksimovic does end up moving to the London Stadium it will be very much West Ham’s gain and Liverpool’s loss.
