A source very close to West Ham majority owner David Sullivan has dropped a major hint that will be music to the ears of Liverpool.

West Ham and Liverpool are at two opposite ends of the scale when it comes to transfer spending this summer.

The Hammers have committed over £155m to sign nine players for new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Liverpool are also under new management with former West Ham target Arne Slot taking the helm from Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

The Reds have gone about things in a very different way, though.

Liverpool have kept their powder mostly dry, with Federico Chiesa the only signing.

It’s not just this summer, though.

Reality to bit for big-spending West Ham?

West Ham are the Premier League’s fifth biggest spenders since 2022 while Liverpool don’t even make the top six.

Yesterday a club insider revealed West Ham’s summer splurge would limit transfer funds for January and next summer.

Many fans have been concerned the spending will eventually have to be offset by the sale of one of the club’s top stars.

Hammers News suggested that might be music to the ears of Liverpool.

The Reds have showed consistent interest in Jarrod Bowen over the years and have also been linked with Mohammed Kudus – a player Slot knows well from their time in the Dutch league.

And so it has proved.

Because now Liverpool have received a major hint from a top West Ham board source on a blockbuster deal.

Liverpool get major hint on blockbuster West Ham deal

Earlier this summer Liverpool were said by Give Me Sport to be lining up a £100m move for Kudus.

That came amid confirmation that Kudus has an £85m West Ham release clause which will be active again from summer 2025.

Liverpool’s hopes of ever signing Bowen look dead in the water since he signed a seven-year deal and pledged to retire at West Ham while also purchasing a £3m Essex mansion and being made the club’s new captain.

Kudus, though, is a different matter altogether for West Ham and Liverpool.

The reports claimed interest from Liverpool in West Ham’s star boy is concrete as they line up their replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Kudus has started the season in the same kind of unplayable form he ended the last for the Hammers.

He has been a certified bargain at £38m from Ajax. But Kudus has never hidden his ambition to play at the highest level.

With Salah speaking out to confirm this will be his last season at Liverpool as things stand, Kudus is emerging as the potential successor.

Now Liverpool have been given real hope that deal will be achievable next summer.

Kudus to pay for splurge as Liverpool loom?

Sean Whetstone counts West Ham majority owner David Sullivan and vice-chair Karren Brady among his close contacts.

And he says the club may have to make some tough decisions in terms of selling a star player to balance the books next summer.

The picture Whetstone has used with his post is that of Liverpool target.

The insider’s explanation of the situation at West Ham suggests Liverpool can and will get their man if they do come in for Kudus next summer.

“West Ham hierarchy fear what financial accounts for this season and next season will bring!” Whetstone said alongside the image of Kudus.

“Next summer with wages/turnover rules coming in for the Premier League the club might have to make some tough decisions, but there are many variables, so the club don’t need to decide on what actions might need to be be taken until the end of the season.”

It is starting to feel somewhat inevitable the Reds will come knocking on West Ham’s door next summer after the reports that they see Kudus as the heir to Salah.

And if Liverpool meet his £85m release clause then there will be little the Hammers can do about it.

Kudus recently changed his agent in a move seen as a pre-cursor for next summer.

While there may not be much West Ham can do about the shadow of Liverpool looming large over Kudus as they look to swap one Mo for another, it does at least mean fans know where they stand.

Hammers supporters now know they must enjoy every moment of watching Kudus this season.

The Irons do at least have the security of knowing they will be well recompensed if he does leave by more than doubling their money. The only issue is by the time Kudus may be proving he’s worth even more.

Money won’t be an issue for Liverpool after a frugal summer. That has most likely been by design too as they know Salah – and potentially others – won’t be cheap to replace.
