Lazy Issa Diop transfer claim is a ‘monster’ case of 2+2=5 after Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho praised West Ham star

Ask any West Ham United fan who has been one of the club’s best pieces of business in recent years and Issa Diop will get a mention.

So quite why West Ham would renege on a vow never to do business with bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur again and sell their young asset is anyone’s guess.

West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold are surely unpopular enough already.

According to the likes of The Telegraph, Manchester United wanted Diop in the summer.

West Ham refused to entertain any offers below £75million.

So there was a collective rolling of eyes among West Ham fans at the weekend when 22-year-old Diop was linked with a £50million move to Spurs by Sky Sports.

In what is undoubtedly the laziest transfer rumour of the upcoming January window so far, Sky Sports claim Tottenham ‘want’ Diop.

Well who wouldn’t?

The report is precariously balanced on the fact that new Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho praised Diop after a man of the match performance for West Ham in a 3-1 win over the Portuguese’s Manchester United side last year.

And the award for flimsiest January transfer rumour goes to…

Mourinho praised Diop in an interview after the game, labelling him a ‘monster’ and crediting West Ham’s scouting department for unearthing the France Under 21 international.

There are so many holes in the report, it is surely a sign of the impending desperation of the media transfer window rumour mill.

Privately Spurs may “want” Diop. Just like West Ham would “want” Harry Kane.

But that doesn’t mean it has any chance of happening.

Even if West Ham were open to selling Diop, Tottenham are the last club they will sell him to.

And even if the Hammers were open to doing business with Spurs, £50million would be nowhere near enough to tempt the East Londoners to part with one of their prised assets.

Diop is a player the owners are surely planning on building a team around, not selling to their rivals.
