The last remaining obstacle in a deal between West Ham and Wolves for Aaron Cresswell has been explained as the transfer edges closer.

Although West Ham have desperately needed young, modern new full-backs for several years, it came as something of a surprise when news broke of interest from Wolves in Aaron Cresswell last week.

Craig Dawson left West Ham for Wolverhampton Wanderers back in January.

And reports have claimed Cresswell could become the latest West Ham fan favourite to make the move to Molinuex in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers have been linked with the likes of Ian Maatsen of Chelsea and Rennes left-back Adrien Truffert as replacements.

But – as always seems to be the case with West Ham transfers – there has been no quick conclusion. And the new season is now less than three weeks away.

Now the last remaining obstacle in a deal between West Ham and Wolves for Cresswell has been explained as the transfer edges closer.

The Athletic reports that Wolves are pushing to get a deal done as they play ‘difficult financial gymnastics’ to get avoid Financial Fair Play penalties.

And all that remains is for the fee to be agreed between West Ham and Wolves. The Hammers are believed to want £5m while Wolves originally offered £2.5m.

West Ham targeting young, pacy, modern fullbacks to replace stalwart

“If they can break the current impasse with West Ham over a transfer fee and add Cresswell — who is understood to be keen on the move — they will have gained another solid character for a relatively low fee…” the report states.

“Wolves see the 33-year-old Scouser as a perfect figure to guide (Hugo) Bueno through the next stage of his development while competing with the 20-year-old for first-team duties.

“He also ticks many of the same boxes as (Matt) Doherty: experience, leadership, knowhow and homegrown status.”

Both of West Ham’s reported targets to replace Cresswell – Maatsen and Truffert – are hugely exciting players.

Maatsen has impressed during pre-season with Chelsea, though, which may make signing him difficult.

French youngster Truffert, 21, is a former teammate of Nayef Aguerd at Rennes. And he bagged an impressive six assists in 28 Ligue 1 games for Rennes last season (Who Scored).
