Goalkeeper Krisztian Hegyi insists that he still dreams of a future in the Premier League as West Ham United weigh up their options with the MTK Budapest loanee.

The Hungary Under-21 international will soon enter the final 12 months of his deal at the London Stadium outfit.

Hegyi’s progress has been impeded by injury issues in recent times, ending a loan spell at Debrecen after only seven appearances in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign.

So when he left West Ham United again for another temporary stint – this time at MTK Budapest – he did so desperate to stay injury-free while also giving some clarity to his uncertain future.

Confident Krisztian Hegyi still wants a West Ham United chance

Speaking to the official MTK website, 23-year-old Krisztian Hegyi is confident that his time will come on English soil. He also points out that West Ham have the option to extend his current deal by a further 12-months, though much will depend on whether he can prove his fitness over an extended period.

“We hope that MTK and West Ham will hold on. Both of my teams are struggling now, but hopefully everything will turn around for the summer,” Hegyi says.

Nuno’s Hammers claimed a valuable point against Manchester City on Saturday but remain in the drop zone. MTK, meanwhile, are tenth in a 12-team Hungarian top-flight.

“I firmly believe that I will get an opportunity in England one day,” Hegyi adds. “I still have a one-year contract and an option [to extend].

“The most important thing is to get back to the level I was at before my injury.

“The national team was also an important aspect in my decision to return to Hungary. I am more visible. The NB I [National Championship] is a first-class championship where young people are playing more and more.”

Hegyi joined West Ham from Szombathelyi Haladas as a teenager in 2019. He had spells on loan at Stevenage, Motherwell and Den Bosch before joining Debrecen in his homeland a year ago.

Hegyi helped the Hammers reach the National League Cup final

West Ham face Boreham Wood in the National League Cup final at 7pm tonight. The Hungary Under-21 played a small but important role in their journey to the decider.

Hegyi was ‘superb’ in a 3-0 victory at Truro City in the group-stage. He also saved a penalty in a shoot-out victory over Sutton United.

Finlay Herrick is expected to start for the Hammers at Meadow Park this evening. Tom Wooster, formerly of Manchester United, is likely to be on the bench.

Starting eight successive NB I matches since joining MTK meanwhile – at the risk of jinxing things – Hegyi does appear to have put those injury issues behind him. The struggling capital city outfit have won only once in that time, though, conceding 17 goals along the way.

Hegyi did secure his first clean sheet, though, in a much-improved defensive display in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Gyori ETO FC.
