Edson Alvarez is open to reuniting with former West Ham United technical director Tim Steidten in Germany but Koln coach Rene Wagner appears to have cast doubt on the transfer.
Steidten was the man who brought Alvarez to London in the summer of 2023, green-lighting a £35 million deal and flying out to Amsterdam to accompany the Mexico captain across the Channel.
Three years later, West Ham United are increasingly desperate to move Edson Alvarez on following an injury-hit loan spell at Fenerbahce.
If Edson Alvarez RETURNED to West Ham this summer, how would you respond? 🇲🇽
And which player would be most worried by his comeback?
According to Sky Germany, the former Ajax enforcer is open to joining a Koln side who appointed Steidten as their Director of Squad Planning ahead of the summer.
Koln heavily linked with West Ham United misfit Edson Alvarez
Yet, Alvarez’s £100,000-a-week wages are expected to pose a considerable obstacle.
And when head coach Rene Wagner was asked to provide an update on Koln’s pursuit of a new midfielder, he refused to talk about Alvarez, only to then immediately confirm his interest in Ellyes Shkiri; the Eintracht Frankfurt ace who has reportedly been identified as a more affordable alternative.
“I can’t confirm whether we are interested in [Alvarez],” Wagner told T-Online.
How would you feel if Kretinsky brought Disasi BACK to West Ham? 🇫🇷
A Chelsea source thinks the return is possible…
“[But Skhiri], I know the player very, very well. We’ll discuss this weekend whether it’s realistic. I’ve been thinking about the player. I’ll find out in the next two days whether it’s possible.”
Shkiri spent four years in the Cathedral City before joining Frankfurt in 2023. Considering that both are experienced, 6ft-plus defensive midfielders also capable of slotting in at centre-half, it seems unlikely that there is room for both at Koln.
