The transfer window is open and that can mean only one thing, West Ham United will be linked with Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.

Almost like clockwork at this time of year West Ham are suddenly linked with a world star or two.

Last year around this time it was Benzema (Daily Star). Last month it was Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic according to the likes of The Sun.

Of course Benzema did not arrive at the London Stadium. Perisic won’t either.

Hammers fans know their place in the food chain

And there’s nothing wrong with that, West Ham fans know their place in the food chain.

Not that West Ham can’t attract top players. Of course they can – and have – in the past. And the owners did finally spend the kind of money they had been promising too last summer.

This summer too Manuel Pellegrini will be backed to bring in another six players.

But some supporters were dreaming this week that Real Madrid’s top scorer might be one of them.

Benzema post sparks excitement and amusement

That’s after Benzema allegedly posted a selfie on social media accompanied by the crossed Hammers symbol synonymous with West Ham.

Several fans who saw the post took to social media themselves to share the image.

The Twitter account West Ham News posted the picture saying: “WE DON’T NEED GOMEZ LADS, KARIM IS ON HIS WAY.”

And that soon got Hammers fans talking.

‘We don’t need Gomez, Karim is on his way’

To add some spice it was West Ham boss Pellegrini who originally signed Benzema at Madrid in 2009.

Most were dismissive of any possible links. But perhaps most surprisingly some fans actually moaned at the prospect of signing the world class forward.

Here are a selection of responses to the picture, which we must add probably has no significance to West Ham whatsoever.

‘We specialise in the elderly’
