Reports have been circulating that Jesse Lingard has decided to shun a permanent move to West Ham United in a bid to fight for his place at Manchester United.

West Ham are desperate to sign Lingard permanently.

But Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dealt their hopes a Hammer blow at the weekend by insisting Lingard is part of his plans AND that the player wants to stay and fight for his place (Sky Sports).

Lingard would be a guaranteed starter at West Ham. He knows it. And both he – and West Ham – certainly benefited from it during his amazing loan spell.

Lingard and Solskjaer deluded over where star fits into Man United picture after West Ham shun

But whatever Solskjaer says and no matter how ambitious and emboldened Lingard might be feeling about giving things another go at Man United, Hammers News takes a look at Lingard’s unlucky 13 – the number of players arguably ahead of the midfielder in the Old Trafford pecking order.

It is quite some list that proves unequivocally that Lingard’s self-confessed number one priority ‘regular football’ simply will not be fulfilled if he shuns West Ham for a Man United stay.

Lingard was already way down the pecking order at Old Trafford, where he had barely featured for TWO YEARS. Not a few games or a couple of months. Not only being used in the cups or in European squads. Lingard was completely frozen out for TWO YEARS under Solskjaer before joining West Ham.

The man every West Ham fan wants to see their club sign this summer made it clear in a recent interview that regular game time is his top priority.

From being a Prem star with Hammers to this: Lingard’s unlucky 13 laid bare after snub

But the unlucky 13 stand in his way in a host of possible positions:

Jadon Sancho

The £74 million arrival of Jadon Sancho since that interview has done little to improve Lingard’s chances of game time at Man United. He will be a guaranteed starter and plays on both sides as a wide forward, as a traditional winger and even a number 10.

Juan Mata

Experienced Spaniard was ahead of Lingard in the pecking order before he left for West Ham. And Solskjaer has just handed him a new one-year deal explaining how crucial he is for the team with his set pieces, delivery and clever football brain (

Paul Pogba

The £90m midfielder starts when fit ahead of Lingard everytime and Man United are trying to get him signed up to a new long-term deal.

Marcus Rashford

Injured right now but will be another who starts without question ahead of Lingard whether it is in that role coming in off the left that he took to so well under David Moyes at West Ham or more advanced through the middle.

Mason Greenwood

The apple of Solskjaer’s eye and Man United’s latest boy wonder, Greenwood has been compared to some of the world’s best finishers and his goals alone make him a guaranteed starter ahead of Lingard.

Edinson Cavani

Has extended his stay at Old Trafford. Given the options available to him, Solskjaer won’t need to use Lingard as a false nine like Moyes did even if Cavani doesn’t play or gets injured.

Scott McTominay

Man United’s answer to West Ham hero Declan Rice is key to how the Red Devils’s midfield functions both in terms of defensive stability and balance. Lingard won’t be playing ahead of the Scot.

The Brazilian has really started to blossom at Man United under Solskjaer and offers something completely different to Lingard.

Bruno Fernandes

Enough said.

Donny van de Beek

You probably won’t find many people arguing that van de Beek offers more than Lingard because he is yet to show it. But Man United shelled out big money for the Dutchman and this season they will want to see some return. His signing was the biggest message of all to Lingard from Solskjaer that he doesn’t have a future at Man United.

Amad Diallo

The 19-year-old wonderkid joined Man United in a deal which could be worth as much as £30m. He is the present and future at Man United. He starts ahead of Lingard.

Anthony Martial

Another who often plays in the role Lingard made his own at West Ham. When on form and scoring goals, Martial can be frighteningly good. He starts ahead of Jesse everytime.

Daniel James

Had an excellent Euros with Wales and a good end to the season with Man United. Has pace for days and is used as an impact sub because of that – putting him ahead of Lingard too.

Things could get even worse for Lingard in the coming month or so with Man United linked with more players as they bid to mount a title challenge.

At West Ham Lingard would be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

He shot back into the public eye during his time with the Hammers and was a Prem star once again for the first time in years.

But now he risks throwing it all away with the delusion that he will get regular game time at Man United.

Sorry Jesse, but it’s never going to happen.

In other West Ham news, all eyes are on huge Celtic clash tonight for Moyes’s transfer hopes.

The accusers become the accused as club which reported West Ham to FIFA gets a taste of their own medicine.
