Jacob Steinberg’s late night update on five West Ham targets hints at fan favourite exit and not for the first time this summer.

Another week down in the summer transfer window and West Ham remain the only Premier League club yet to make a signing for their first team.

But if the window was being ranked on the number of players linked with clubs, West Ham would be top of the tree and then some.

Yesterday a journalist claimed West Ham were closing in on signing Man United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay from Man United.

And there have been claims West Ham’s move for James Ward-Prowse is not dead.

Fabrizio Romano then exclusively brought news that West Ham have agreed personal terms with Ajax midfield destroyer Edson Alvarez.

Now a Guardian journalist with strong sources at the Hammers has delivered a comprehensive rundown of the latest transfer news.

Hammers ‘confident’ on Alvarez and Ward-Prowse deal not dead with Downes exchange still on cards claims journalist

In a detailed report published overnight, Steinberg says the Hammers are ‘confident’ of signing Mexico star Alvarez.

He claims the move for Ward-Prowse has ‘stalled’ but suggests it is not dead because fan favourite and boyhood Hammers supporter Flynn Downes could still depart for the south coast club as part of a deal.

Steinberg says Tim Steidten is struggling to convince David Moyes to move for Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana.

And he claims McTominay and Conor Gallagher remain alternative options should a move for Ward-Prowse ultimately fail to transpire.

“West Ham are confident of clinching a deal for the Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez and are attempting to mend relations between David Moyes and Tim Steidten, the club’s technical director, before the season begins…” Steinberg reports.

“West Ham are unwilling to go above £30m for Ward-Prowse and are seeking a compromise with Southampton, who could take Flynn Downes as part of a deal for the 28-year-old.”
