So Sam Allardyce and West Ham United have signed a new goalkeeper. 26 year old, Adrian, signed a 3 year contract on a free transfer, and was Officially announced last Wednesday afternoon.
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed with this signing, especially after seeing a load of his gaffs on YouTube. And throw in the fact I’ve never heard of him either, and then a team like Real Betis, who are not exactly a force in La Liga, have not renewed his contract, suggests they weren’t really bothered about keeping him.
Jussi Jaaskelainen deserves to start the new season as first choice following the end to the season he had for The Hammers. However, I’ve made no secret of my dislike for his overall game. He doesn’t catch the ball first time, I don’t see him come and claim crosses very often, his distribution is poor, and doesn’t feel like a very commanding presence at the back.
So I was hoping Big Sam would sign a goalkeeper who is ready to stake a claim immediately for the number 1 spot. Adrian has only broken into the Betis team in the last season, so suggests he is hardly going to push JJ hard. But is that how Allardyce wants it? After all, we do know that Big Sam has his favourites!
Overall, I’m not really inspired by this signing, but I hope that I’m proved wrong, and for a free transfer, there is no real risk if it doesn’t work out.
