West Ham are reportedly interested in signing Charles Aranguiz.
According to trusted insider EXWHUEmployee – speaking on The West Ham Way podcast on Phoenix FM (November 6) – West Ham will target Bayer Leverkusen’s Aranguiz in January.
West Ham have identified that a new midfielder is needed in the January window. Manuel Pellegrini wants to sign a box-to-box midfielder and his fellow countryman Aranguiz appears to be a key target. The Hammers could launch a swoop for the Chile midfielder in the new year.
Aranguiz has played 12 games this season, scoring once and providing three assists. He has been in Europe since 2015 when he moved to Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, he has racked up 115 appearances and 10 goals.
Bargain-basement again for West Ham
While it is refreshing to learn that West Ham have finally identified the midfield problems, Aranguiz is an underwhelming target. It’s back to the bargain-basement for David Sullivan and David Gold with this cheap move.
Aranguiz is out of contract at the end of the season so he will not cost the club much. But the 30-year-old will have no sell-on value, either. Have we not learnt from the Carlos Sanchez-style deals in the recent past?
West Ham need legs in midfield and Aranguiz might not be able to provide that in the long-term future. Unfortunately, it seems that past lessons have been ignored and the typical penny-pinching January awaits.
