West Ham midfielder Josh Cullen is set to join Charlton Athletic on loan. According to reliable West Ham insider EXWHUEmployee, Cullen is at Charlton’s training ground and he is undergoing a medical ahead of a loan move.
Cullen spent last season on loan at Charlton. Lee Bowyer has been determined to bring the Republic of Ireland midfielder back to The Valley. But Manuel Pellegrini took Cullen to China to run the rule over him.
Now that pre-season has finished, it looks like Cullen is on his way out. The 23-year-old looks certain to return to Charlton for another season on loan.
Josh Cullen: Coup for Charlton
Cullen was a fan favourite at Charlton last season as he played a pivotal role in their promotion. The central midfielder played 32 games for the Addicks, scoring once and providing six assists.
He helped take Charlton to the play-off final at Wembley. And his last-minute cross proved decisive as Patrick Bauer turned in from close-range to seal Charlton’s promotion.
Cullen will return to Charlton for their Championship campaign. Bowyer knows Cullen’s game and this will be a major boost as the South London club aim to stay in the Championship.
What does the future hold for Josh Cullen?
Pellegrini checked on Cullen during pre-season but has decided to send him out on loan again. After two spells with Bradford City and one stint with Bolton Wanderers, this will be the fifth time Cullen has been loaned out by West Ham.
The homegrown midfielder’s future at The London Stadium looks bleak. He has only played nine times for the Hammers and was unable to show Pellegrini why he should be included this season.
With his contract running out at the end of the season, this could be the end of Cullen’s West Ham stay. The Essex-born midfielder will become a free agent next summer.
