West Ham have been looking for a new central midfielder this summer. Despite signing Pablo Fornals, West Ham want another midfielder who can sit deeper.
Several names have been mentioned. But West Ham will only sign a new midfielder if they can sell one or two in that position, reliable insider EXWHUEmployee has revealed on The West Ham Way podcast (Thursday 20th June).
Carlos Sanchez and Pedro Obiang are the two most obvious players who could leave. Obiang was linked with Fiorentina in January (Sky Sports News) and he could return to Italy.
Sanchez spent most of last season injured. And Manuel Pellegrini might fancy an update on the veteran Colombian. If one or both of these players leave, West Ham could sign a new central midfielder.
Who could join West Ham?
West Ham have been heavily linked with Joan Jordan in recent weeks. According to Sky Sports News, the Irons have made a £13m bid for the SD Eibar midfielder, which should trigger his release clause.
The 24-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder who chipped in with four goals and four assists last season. He could be West Ham’s new midfielder if Obiang or Sanchez leaves.
Alternatively, West Ham could sign two Newcastle United players. Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden are West Ham targets, according to The London Evening Standard.
Shelvey has had his injury problems in the recent past but he is a strong passer of the ball and a boyhood West Ham fan. Meanwhile, Hayden wants to move down south for family reasons.
Both are English and would improve the homegrown quota. At the right price, Hayden could be a shrewd piece of business. But a deal of Hayden, Shelvey, Jordan or another central midfielder depends on the future of Obiang and Sanchez.
