West Ham United have stepped up their pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez in the last 48 hours.

Uruguayan forward Gomez has been West Ham’s prime target since January.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini wants the 22-year-old as the central figure to the young, talented team he is putting together.

It has become a protracted affair with claim and counter claim on an almost daily basis.

Striker need becoming more acute by the day

West Ham already needed a new forward after the departures of Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez.

That need has become even more acute after the Hammers agreed to sell Marko Arnautovic following the player’s transfer request (Sky Sports).

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that Gomez ‘was keen’ on a move to West Ham.

Since then the same source has cast doubt on the move suggesting the player wants to remain in Spain, where he has been linked with a switch to Valencia.

Insider reveals when West Ham should get final answer

Now reliable West Ham insider ExWHUemployee has delivered a new update and claims the club should have a definite answer from Gomez by the end of Friday.

But the Twitter and radio personality does not sound hopeful, likening the situation to West Ham’s fruitless pursuit of Carlos Bacca a few transfer windows ago.

“Nope (West Ham have not signed Gomez yet) but they (Valencia) are also in Spain which is where he wants to stay,” ExWHUemployee said on Twitter.

“Sadly I think we have wasted time here but we shall see. Reckon we will know by the end of the day either way.

“Hope I’m wrong but throughout this has reminded me of Carlos Bacca deal.

“No official word yet but it appears he would rather stay in Spain than have more money with us at this point. Almost opposite intentions or Arnie and typically both screw us.”

Familiar tale of woe for West Ham

So it looks as though the Gomez chase seems destined to fail.

If that is the case he joins a long list of strikers who simply do not see West Ham as the right step in their careers.

Bacca, Alexandre Lacazette and Michy Batshuayi to name but a few.

It leaves Pellegrini in a difficult situation with the transfer window closing a month on Monday.
