Trusted West Ham insider EXWHUEmployee has taken to Twitter to calm things down on the Maxi Gomez front. West Ham fans had started to get carried away after the latest news reports.
Sky Sports News claimed that Gomez is keen to move to West Ham. The report suggests West Ham have had a £29m bid accepted for Gomez, who is eager to join after his Valencia move stalled.
But reliable insider EXWHUEmployee has denied this is the case. He tweeted to say that Gomez was “undecided” rather than “keen”, as well as clarifying that Celta Vigo have not accepted a bid from West Ham for the Uruguay striker.
Maxi Gomez: Can West Ham land their man?
Gomez is West Ham’s number one target. This dates back to January when Mario Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini identified him as a replacement for Marko Arnautovic (The Express).
Now that Arnautovic is playing up again and looking for a move, this Gomez interest makes sense. In fact, he is quickly becoming the main priority for the club.
The Hammers have already lost Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez this summer. And with doubt surrounding the future of Javier Hernandez, Gomez is fast becoming a necessary signing.
West Ham face competition from Valencia, who can offer the 22-year-old Champions League football and the chance to stay in Spain. But he is still mulling over his decision, which will come sooner now that Uruguay are out of the Copa America.
If West Ham can land him, they would get Pellegrini’s top target. And he could be a major coup if he fulfils his potential, especially if the £29m rumours are correct.
