Insider delivers verdict on West Ham's reported January transfer move for Gonzalo Plata

West Ham United have been linked with a move for Ecuadorian winger Gonzalo Plata.

Why West Ham players were spotted in fits of laughter with Bowen after Villa win

Sport Witness, The Sun (Sunday November 29th, page 65) and Portuguese outlet Record have all carried reports claiming Plata could leave Sporting in January and that West Ham are interested.

Plata, 20, has eight caps for Ecuador and can play on either wing.

West Ham want South American Plata – reports

The reports state that West Ham boss David Moyes was interested in a deal in the summer but nothing materialised.

Now it is reported West Ham could revisit the move next month.

But West Ham insiders Claret & Hugh – who have close links to co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold – say that is unlikely.

Delivering their verdict on the Plata reports, Claret & Hugh claim West Ham are prioritising other areas of the team.

Insiders explain why move for Ecuadorian is ‘unlikely’

“We don’t need a winger – we need a striker and defensive midfielder as we go into the second half of the season,” C&H state.

“Jarrod Bowen is doing a great job down that side of the park and although not always at his best Andriy Yarmolenko is an adequate replacement when he does find a level of form.

Sport Witness are regularly linking players with the Irons but we really don’t see this one as being too likely.”

C&H make a salient point.

But that could of course all change if Yarmolenko leaves the club in January.

Hammers targets could be subject to change depending on Yarmo future

The Ukranian is West Ham’s highest earner on £115,000 per week.

That is an expensive substitute/squad player for a team like West Ham.

The Hammers’s owners have been desperately trying to trim the wage bill in recent seasons and Yarmo has been linked with a move away on several occasions.

If he was to leave in January then Moyes will certainly need a winger. And having someone like Plata, who can play on both flanks, could be an ideal replacement.
