Marseille have offered West Ham the chance to re-sign Dimitri Payet, according to reliable insider EXWHUEmployee. Speaking on The West Ham Way podcast on Phoenix FM (Thursday 27th June), EXWHUEmployee told listeners that West Ham have been offered the opportunity to bring Payet back.

However, at this moment in time, West Ham are not interested. That could change, of course, depending on how the rest of the summer window pans out.

Payet, who used to be a fan favourite in East London, is one of many players Marseille are looking to ship. The Ligue 1 team are cash-strapped after failing to qualify for Europe. And Marseille are hoping that West Ham take the option to re-sign Payet.

Payet joined West Ham in summer 2015 and became an instant hit. With his skill and set-piece specialities, Payet oozed class and took West Ham to seventh in the league.

In one-and-a-half seasons with the Hammers, Payet scored 15 goals and provided 23 assists in 60 games. He was a hero at West Ham, he was nominated for the 2016 PFA Player of the Year award, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year and he won the Hammer of the Year accolade.

This all earned him a recall to the French national team, where he played a starring role at Euro 2016. But things went sour in January 2017. The silky winger announced that he wanted to leave and he returned to Marseille.

The suddenness of Payet’s departure still hurts many West Ham fans. He was the fan favourite and he forced an exit so soon. But quite a few supporters would have him back in a flash.

Should West Ham re-sign Dimitri Payet?

This is a tricky question. West Ham currently hold no interest in Payet but they could change their mind. Should West Ham consider bringing Payet back to The London Stadium?

There are good arguments on both sides. On the one hand, the 32-year-old is not the player he once was and, of course, some fans do not forgive him for his January 2017 exit.

But Payet is a maverick talent. With Payet back, West Ham could reach even newer heights. However, it all comes down to price and a new winger is not the priority for Manuel Pellegrini at this time.
