According to reliable West Ham insider EXWHUEmployee, Guillermo Maripan is the club’s most likely new addition in central defence.
Speaking on The West Ham Way podcast on Phoenix FM (Wednesday 15th May), EXWHUEmployee told listeners that a new centre-back is a priority with Maripan the most probable signing.
Manuel Pellegrini has identified fellow Chilean Maripan to fix West Ham’s leaky defence. The Deportivo Alaves defender could be on his way to East London this summer.
West Ham’s centre-back situation
If Maripan joins, he would be competing with Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna for a starting spot in central defence.
Winston Reid is also on West Ham’s books. But there are concerns about the popular Kiwi’s fitness because he last played in March 2018.
Pellegrini clearly wants another player at centre-half to provide competition. And compatriot Maripan has impressed at Alaves enough to perk Pellegrini’s interest.
Who is Guillermo Maripan?
Maripan is a towering centre-back who stands at 6ft 4in tall. In terms of aerial duels and tackling, he ranks among the top performers in La Liga this season.
The Chile international is currently out injured but he was a mainstay in the Alaves defence until that point. With Maripan at the back, Alaves were pushing for European qualification.
West Ham have a growing South American contingent. And the 25-year-old might be tempted to join West Ham’s ranks and try his luck in the Premier League.
