Graham Potter wants these two players to be his first signings at West Ham

West Ham United appear to be closing in on the appointment of Graham Potter.

It’s looking like Graham Potter will be the man to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham, after the club formally offered the 49-year-old a contract on Monday night.

Potter has apparently asked the West Ham board to allow him 24 hours to make a decision about taking over at the London Stadium.

I’m sure he will be officially confirmed as our new manager imminently.

The former Chelsea boss will be under no illusion though regarding the size of the task that awaits him at West Ham.

The squad has been really poorly put together, and we desperately need an injection of pace, energy and youth.

It seems like that’s exactly what Potter has planned.

Potter faces a lot of hard work ahead of him at West Ham, if he accepts the job of course.

Much work will need to be done in the transfer market, and now it has come to light exactly who the 49-year-old wants to bring to the London Stadium this month.

According to a report from The Sun, Potter’s first two signings at West Ham could be Brighton striker Evan Ferguson and Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemka – both on loan deals.

I think those two players would be excellent additions for the Hammers.

However, if we are going to sign them on loan, having a purchase option included in the deal will be of paramount importance.

West Ham cannot afford to have another Jesse Lingard situation on our hands.

Ferguson, 20, would provide us with a real focal point to our attacking play.

He has definitely gone off the boil over the past 12 months, but if he could rediscover his 202/23 form, West Ham will be onto a winner.

Meanwhile, Chukwuemka would add something to our midfield that we’ve desperately lacked since Declan Rice left the club in 2023.

The 21-year-old Chelsea star has energy, athleticism and ball-carrying ability in abundance.

He is a sensational talent and would add some real balance to our engine room. He’s extremely gifted from a technical perspective as well.

The other thing I like about these two transfer targets is their ages.

At 20 and 21 respectively, Ferguson and Chukwuemeka are exactly the type of players we should be targeting.

An exciting future awaits West Ham with Graham Potter at the helm, I’m sure of it.

However, as mentioned earlier, if the Hammers owners are in fact planning to sign Ferguson and Chukwuemeka on loan, they absolutely must include purchase options in the deals.

Otherwise it will be a fairly pointless exercise for us.
