Genuinely jaw-dropping claim made about Taty Castellanos deal just two days after he joined West Ham

West Ham United are in a dire situation right now, one that Taty Castellanos will struggle to help extricate them from.

Even a couple of new signings in the January transfer window have brought little cheer for West Ham fans.

Tuesday night’s defeat to Nottingham Forest felt like the nail in the coffin for the Hammers’ Premier League survival hopes.

Castellanos made his debut for the Hammers during the 2-1 loss at the London Stadium and despite plenty of effort, he offered little threat.

What are your EXPECTATIONS for Taty Castellanos? 🇦🇷

What does he need to do to justify that £27m price-tag?

Valentin Castellanos of Lazio celebrates his goal during the Serie A match between Genoa CFC and SS Lazio at Luigi Ferraris Stadium on September 29, 2025 in Genoa, Italy.

West Ham completed the signing of Castellanos from Lazio for around £26 million on Monday.

However, a truly jaw-dropping claim has just been made concerning the deal for the Argentine.

Shock claim made about Taty Castellanos two days after he joined West Ham

The 27-year-old has been an extremely solid performer throughout his career in the professional game so far.

With 100 club goals in 301 appearances to his name, the man known as ‘Taty’ clearly knows where the net is.

Whether he will be able to fire West Ham to safety is another matter entirely, of course.

Football journalist Dean Jones has now made a stunning claim about the Hammers’ deal to bring Castellanos to the London Stadium.

When speaking to the Ranks FC Podcast, Jones was asked about the Taty transfer and what he said will leave West Ham fans gobsmacked.

“I was told that a month ago, Castellanos was valued internally at 13 million pounds, Jones explained.

That’s where I start to worry for them. If that’s true, I’ve only had it from one source, so I don’t know, but I can believe it.”

So, there is a chance that West Ham have paid Lazio double what the Italian club valued the Argentine striker at?

As ridiculous as that sounds, it definitely wouldn’t be outside the realms of possibility.

West Ham recruitment hits new low

West Ham have partaken in some truly awful transfer business over the past few years.

While David Sullivan has been hesitant to pay big money for younger players with high ceilings, he has had no problem splashing out lavish funds on players who are either too old or simply not good enough.

Niclas Fullkrug and Max Kilman are the perfect examples of that.

However, if West Ham truly have paid £26 million for a player who was valued at just £13 million, is it any wonder why they are in so much trouble?

Big improvements are needed moving forward and the sad thing is, it may take relegation down to the Championship for everyone at the club to actually wake up and realise the extent of the issues present right now.
