The agent of West Ham target Gabriel Barbosa has broken his silence, explaining how we made a formal offer for his client’s services.
Eurosport claimed earlier this month that Hammers boss David Moyes is keen to bring the 25-year-old striker to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.
Sky Sports then claimed that West Ham had actually submitted an offer for the Brazilian.
The proposal allegedly sent to Flamengo from the Irons was an 18-month loan with an option to buy him for £25 million at the end of that deal.
Moyes’s need for a new striker this month has been well-documented. And considering Gabigol’s record in front of goal, it is easy to see why the Hammers would want to sign him.
There were question marks as to whether West Ham had actually made a bid for Barbosa in the first place, however. After all, he is hardly Moyes’s type of striker. He has struggled in Europe in the past and doesn’t run around as much as he should, nor is he a hard worker.
It seems as though our interest in Gabigol is genuine though…
Gabriel Barbosa agent breaks silence amidst West Ham links
The 25-year-old’s agent Junior Pedroso has insisted that the Hammers did indeed submit an official offer for his client.
Pedroso spoke exclusively to Globo Esporte and lifted the lid on West Ham’s loan offer for the Brazilian hitman:
“The other club that actually went about with a formalisation of a loan offer was West Ham. And then I didn’t even take that offer to Gabriel, I directed it to Flamengo, who turned it down. Flamengo doesn’t see a loan as a possibility, even paying a fortune, and we wouldn’t consider a loan at the moment either. When you think about a Premier League, which is what has been knocking on our door a lot, it’s almost a dream for a player of his level to be playing at this level of the league for an entire season. So, for sure this is a wish, it was never hidden from Flamengo that at some point it was inevitable for Gabriel to return to Europe. This is very clear, but we will not return to Europe at any cost. It has to be a very good project to convince Gabriel to come back.”
So there you have it.
West Ham did make a bid for Gabriel Barbosa according to his agent.
It was deemed unacceptable by Flamengo though. If we are to sign Gabigol this month, the West Ham owners clearly need to submit a permanent offer for him.
Barbosa’s record of 129 goals in 263 career games speaks for itself (Transfermarkt).
Signing him would certainly be better than bringing nobody at all in this month. Whether Moyes and the Hammers owners share that opinion though, is another matter entirely.
