West Ham United have the green light to try and get a deal done for Maxi Gomez after Uruguay crashed out of the Copa America.
West Ham have been chasing Gomez since January (Sky Sports).
The Celta Vigo striker is Manuel Pellegri’s prime transfer target (London Evening Standard).
But West Ham have made little headway with their interest given the player has been in Brazil with the Uruguay squad competing in the Copa America.
But despite being one of the favourites the sky blues wasted a host of chances and had several goals ruled out by VAR as they lost on penalties to Peru despite dominating the game.
Barcelona’s Luis Suarez missed the only penalty in 10 as Peru won 5-4 on spot kicks.
Suarez sends Uruguay crashing out
It means West Ham target Gomez will now be available for talks should the Hammers agree a fee with his club.
The 22-year-old returns home without registering a single minute of action for Uruguay in their four games. Gomez was an unused substitute throughout.
Of course there is no great shame in that. He does after all have the likes of PSG star Edison Cavani and Suarez ahead of him up front.
Uruguay could have done with Gomez up front based on their profligate display.
No excuses for West Ham one way or another
His participation in the Copa was cited as a key reason for a lack of progress in West Ham’s interest.
So now there will be no excuses to get the situation resolved one way or another so the Hammers can start planning for the new season.
West Ham start pre-season training on Monday.
Interesting times ahead.
