West Ham United look set to miss out to London rivals Fulham for striker target Josh Maja.
That’s according to a report from Sky Sports today.
West Ham were reportedly locked in talks to sign Bordeaux striker Maja last week according to a report from L’Equipe.
West Ham were ‘in talks’ for Maja last week claimed report
The Hammers have been frantically trying to sign a new centre-forward since selling Sebastien Haller to Ajax three weeks ago.
West Ham insider ExWHUemployee recently claimed that the 22-year-old could be an option for David Moyes.
And L’Equipe claimed the Hammers have been in talks to bring the London-born forward back to England – where he played for Sunderland.
But according to Sky Sports, Maja looks set for a loan move to Fulham instead.
And that will infuriate West Ham fans with David Moyes admitting he is unlikely to do any business on deadline day following the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool (Evening Standard).
Fulham set to beat Hammers to striker target?
If West Ham do not make a striker signing it means Moyes is reliant on injury-prone converted winger Michail Antonio as his only recognised senior striker for the rest of the season.
There are high hopes for young starlet Mipo Odubeko.
But he is untested and also has a history of injuries.
The same could of course be argued about 22-year-old Maja. But he would have represented a sensible and realistic option as back-up for Antonio.
Fans furious over forward failure
In reality West Ham needed a defensive midfielder, left-back and striker this month.
Instead they have signed attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard on loan.
Moyes has suggested Lingard could be used as a false nine in the absence of Antonio.
But Manchester United have tried Lingard in that role – against West Ham no less – with little success.
While there is still time there is still hope on deadline day.
The clock is ticking, though, and West Ham fans hoping for a new arrival look set to be disappointed.
