Four things for West Ham fans to know about Maxi Gomez

As reported by the Evening Standard, West Ham United have had a £27 million offer for Celta Vigo youngster Maxi Gomez knocked back, with the Spanish outfit demanding a whopping £35 million.

It is a link that has seemingly come out of nowhere, and most Hammers supporters will not know too much about the 21-year-old.

£35 million would be a lot for someone so young and little known in these parts, so here is some information for Hammers fans to sink their teeth into, as they decide whether or not to get behind such news.

An out-and-out striker

Gomez has not been around for very long, but he has scored goals at both Defensor Sporting and Celta Vigo – 46 in league matches to be precise – since turning professional in 2015. That is a rate of slightly better than one in two.

While current West Ham attacker Marko Arnuatovic operates as an industrious centre-forward, Gomez is a poacher; as demonstrated by his entire tally of goals last season coming from inside the penalty area

He is yet to establish himself as an indispensable starter – that is difficult when you have Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani ahead of you – but Gomez has been involved in the international setup since last year and has earned seven caps. His rise saw him earn a spot in Oscar Tabarez’s World Cup squad.

Battering ram

Nicknamed ‘The Bull’, one admirable trait in Gomez is his willingness to do whatever it takes to score goals and, if that means sticking his head in where it might hurt then so be it. Gomez is well known in Spain for his physicality and determination, something that would definitely stand him in good stead at West Ham.

Admirable character

Gomez left home at the tender age of 15 to join Defensor Sporting in Montevideo.

Despite being just 21 he has already been targeted by Beijing Gouan of the Chinese Super League as reported by Goal, where he could easily have moved to earn big bucks. But the desire is clearly there for him to prove himself in Europe.

In only his second ever appearance for Sporting, he stepped up to take a penalty in the Copa Sudamericana and scored.
