Former West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere has been forced to train with Italian Serie B side Como in a desperate bid to save his career.

Boyhood Hammer Wilshere said it was a dream come true for him when he signed for West Ham under Manuel Pellegrini.

But that dream quickly became a nightmare as the injury issues which have plagued the talented midfielder’s career meant his new era at West Ham proved a false dawn.

In the end Wilshere had his West Ham contract terminated by mutual consent on deadline day last year.

Wilshere burned bridges with West Ham fans following departure

And despite picking up over £11 million in wages from the Hammers in two years – for just 18 appearances in return – he burned his bridges with West Ham fans with his attitude and comments since his departure.

Wilshere did a seemingly endless series of interviews after leaving West Ham where he did not have many good things to say about the club.

Wilshere has been at it again this week with an interview on Sky Sports. The highlights?

“I just had to get out of there.

“I was probably getting to that point, if I had stayed another year, where it would have been really tough mentally to come back from.”

Wilshere wanted bigger club that played better football after leaving Hammers

Wilshere also said he needed to play for a ‘bigger club which played better football than West Ham’.

He had a brief spell back at Bournemouth in the Championship at the end of last season but was not retained.

And the 29-year-old admitted in an emotional interview with The Athletic last week that he is struggling to rescue his career having not received any offers.

Now the ex West Ham man’s latest attempt to save his career has been hit by a new blow after he flew to Italy to train with Serie B side Como – where Dennis Wise is a director.

But an issue with Wilshere’s passport now that the UK has left the EU has put the kibosh on any plans he might have to sign for the club.

A tweet from the official Serie B Twitter account, released on deadline day, translates as: “Jack Wilshere is training with Como 1907 by Jack Gattuso in these hours.

“But he cannot be registered in #SerieBKT because of the non-EU passport.”

Whether Wilshere can find a workaround remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, less than a year on from his departure West Ham have well and truly moved on from the shambolic recruitment of the Pellegrini and Mario Husillos era which saw the likes of Wilshere and the hapless Carlos Sanchez signed on big wages.

Midfield ace Nikola Vlasic looks set to be joined at the club by Alex Kral before the deadline.

And they have added to the captures of Kurt Zouma and Alphonse Areola.
