Forget Darwin Nunez West Ham must move fast for the new Luis Suarez after striker Matias Arezo was relegated

Forget Darwin Nunez because West Ham must move fast for the new Luis Suarez after striker Matias Arezo was relegated.

West Ham have been heavily linked with Uruguay striker Nunez since seeing a bid fail in the January window (Sky Sports).

The interest from West Ham in Nunez, dubbed the new Edinson Cavani after his brilliant compatriot, only served to alert a host of top European clubs to his potential and availability, though.

Now Nunez looks seriously out of West Ham’s reach this summer as David Moyes continues his search for striker number 50 of the David Sullivan and David Gold tenure.

The likes of PSG, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with the powerful 22-year-old (The Independent).

Arezo, 19, came through the ranks at Uruguayan outfit River Plate Montevideo and enjoyed a healthy record of 37 goals and 14 assists in 91 first-team matches.

But he made what has turned out to be a disastrous move to Spanish side Granada in January for around £6.2m.

Arezo, who is famous for being one of the top young talents in world football on the video game Football Manager, has barely featured and Granada have been relegated from La Liga.

The Premier League is no video game. But Moyes has always insisted he wants to build West Ham around young, emerging talent, hungry to prove themselves at the top level and follow the Red Bull blueprint.

Well if that is the case then Arezo could be the perfect signing.

The Times published a feature on the striker a couple of months ago which gave him top billing and explained the story behind Arezo being dubbed the new Luis Suarez.

“Those who worked with Arezo at River Plate say he needs continuity to start firing in European football,” The Times stated in a feature on the striker.

“Arezo scored 37 goals in 91 appearances for River Plate between 2019 and 2022 after rising through the ranks. His low-set physique, movement in the box and goalscoring ability have led to comparisons with Luis Suárez, Uruguay’s record scorer and the man who has set the bar for young centre forwards in his homeland.

“The River Plate manager, Gustavo Díaz, sees parallels between Arezo’s Granada transfer and Suárez’s move to lowly Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie when he was 19. Suárez spent a season there before switching to Ajax and eventually sealing his breakthrough move to Liverpool in 2011.”

There is no reason West Ham can’t be Arezo’s answer to Ajax on that particular path.

And West Ham could get themselves an absolute bargain too as Granada will be desperate for cash following their relegation.

While West Ham fans want to see the club sign a top quality forward, a Hammers insider claimed last week that Moyes wants a young value-for-money forward he can use as back-up to Michail Antonio.

Even more reason why Arezo could be the perfect answer for West Ham this summer.
