Italian transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has delivered a Chelsea update which just shows how laughable recent West Ham rumours are.
According to various reports recently, West Ham have allegedly been eyeing a surprise move to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
The site Westhamfans.org suggested that a source very highly placed at Chelsea had informed them that West Ham had made it very clear that they want to try and lure Rudiger away from Stamford Bridge.
The feisty but brilliant German defender is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer.
And as things stand, talks regarding a new deal between player and club have reached an impasse.
West Ham insiders Claret and Hugh recently poured cold water on the claims.
Although most West Ham fans would surely have realised for themselves the links were more than a touch laughable.
West Ham are doing brilliantly again this season and recently beat Rudiger’s Chelsea 3-2.
But the Blues are – unfortunately whether we like it or not – on another level to us both financially and in terms of being one of Europe’s elite. One look at the training facilities on offer at both clubs will tell you as much.
Despite all that some West Ham fans allowed themselves to get carried away by the speculation, believing a move could be on the cards in January to bolster David Moyes’s defensive options having lost both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma to long-term injuries.
A transfer update on Rudiger from self-styled transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shows just how laughable the West Ham rumours are, though.
That’s because Romano has revealed Chelsea are still desperately trying to agree a new contract with Rudiger.
And if they can’t manage it, then Real Madrid are waiting in the wings to pounce.
Fabrizio Romano Chelsea update shows how laughable West Ham transfer rumours are
“Antonio Rüdiger in talks with Chelsea over new contract since months – but agreement still ‘far from being reached’,” Romano said on Twitter.
“Real Madrid want to sign him as free agent.
“Bayern have no plans to pay the salary asked by Rüdiger, as things stand. Tottenham not in the race.”
As you can see West Ham do not even get a mention.
That’s not to say West Ham cannot attract top quality players. After all Moyes persuaded Zouma to join the Hammers from Chelsea.
But West Ham have hired head of recruitment Rob Newman from Man City for a reason.
Moyes wants to identify and sign young, talented players hungry to prove themselves at the top level.
Yes there may be the odd experienced player brought in here and there.
But would West Ham really have the wherewithal to offer a player like Rudiger the kind of contract that could compete with Chelsea or a Real Madrid.
Let’s stick to unearthing the next Rudiger rather than risking the club’s financial future on securing the one coming into the twilight of his career.
