Excited Tony Cottee and Tony Gale run the rule over West Ham transfer business

West Ham United fans are excited for the new season after unprecedented spending and club legends Tony Gale and Tony Cottee are no different.

When Manuel Pellegrini was appointed the club’s new manager it signalled the change fans were demanding.

Protests against the unpopular owners last season have been replaced by renewed optimism.

That has been in no small part to the £100 million spent on 10 new signings this summer.

While the majority of Premier League clubs have been busy, the Hammers are widely recognised as having done some of the best business.

Breathe in the optimism

Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko, Lukasz Fabianski, Jack Wilshere, Felipe Anderson, Fabian Balbuena, Carlos Sanchez and Lucas Perez have been brought in for the first team while young Xande Silva is one for the future.

There is the somewhat unfamiliar waft of optimism in the East London air.

And West Ham’s two most famous Tony’s, Cottee and Gale, have been breathing it in.

Speaking on Sky Sports assessing the club’s summer business, both were suitably impressed.

‘Great to see the club splashing the cash’

“For me Jack Wilshere is the one (signing that stands out),” Cottee told Sky Sports News.

“Yes they’ve signed some other good players, they’ve paid a lot of money for those players as well, which is great from the club’s point of view if you’re a fan – which I am – it’s great to see the club splashing the cash.

“Jack Wilshere, free transfer, his family are West Ham fans, he supported the club as a boy which is great, he comes into the football club, knows what it’s all about and he’s a fantastic player, we’ve just got to keep him fit.

“If you keep Jack Wilshere fit not only will he be a star man for West Ham, he’ll be a star man for England as well so I’m really, really excited to see him at the football club and I think he’ll slot into that midfield and be a real addition to the football club.”

Gale, like Cottee, has called on the board to start making good on their promises to spend big since the move to the London Stadium.

‘Another good signing’

And he is excited after they finally got the message this summer.

“I can’t see (Perez) starting to be honest because you talk about (Marko) Arnautovic is their best striker,” Gale told Sky Sports News.

“You’ve got Yarmolenko, you’ve got Michail Antonio as well and of course Felipe Anderson now who everyone is talking about really well that can change games. Not in the starting line-up for me, but another good signing.”

There aren’t many pundits who know West Ham better than Gale and Cottee.

Excitement building

Both know the club inside out.

They also tend to take a considered view on goings on at the London Stadium.

The fact they are both impressed will only add to the excitement building.

Let’s just hope that isn’t dampened too much after Sunday’s visit to face Liverpool at Anfield.
