Everton's James McCarthy is a January loan target for West Ham - report

West Ham are interested in signing Everton midfielder James McCarthy on loan, according to The Daily Mail.

Manuel Pellegrini is set to prioritise a midfielder signing this month and McCarthy is an option.

McCarthy is just returning from a lengthy injury and Everton could loan him out to get him fit again.

West Ham face competition from West Bromwich Albion and Fulham for the holding midfielder.

Known for his tenacity in midfield, McCarthy has been in England since 2009.

Initially at Wigan Athletic, the Republic of Ireland international moved to Everton in 2013 after the Latics were relegated.

The 28-year-old has over 200 Premier League appearances under his belt, as well as 41 caps for the Irish.

But after such a long injury, Marco Silva might be reluctant to give him game time ahead of the likes of Idrissa Gana Gueye and Andre Gomes.

A loan move seems the best option for the former Hamilton Academical man, who has 18 months left on his Everton contract.

McCarthy is an unpopular figure among West Ham fans because of one moment with Dimitri Payet.

When the Frenchman was excelling at West Ham, McCarthy injured him with a horror tackle.

Some West Ham fans still hold a grudge against McCarthy for what they felt was a deliberate ploy to stop the tricky winger.

Therefore, there might be mixed reaction if Pellegrini decides to sign the midfielder.
