David Moyes is eyeing a new left-back target in the shape of Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet.
That’s according to a new report from 90Min which states West Ham are interested in a late deal for the 24-year-old Ivory Coast star.
Burnley have been credited with an interest in Cornet as have Newcastle and Hertha Berlin.
Hammers boss Moyes making move for new left-back target who possesses serious goal threat
But West Ham would be the most attractive proposition for the pacy Cornet, who can also play in midfield.
The reported Hammers target has 13 goals and 13 assists for Lyon from left-back over the last three seasons.
A powerful and athletic player and at 24 years old, Cornet fits Moyes’s West Ham recruitment policy down to a tee.
The 90Min report highlights West Ham’s participation in the Europa League as an added incentive for Cornet too.
It also points out that Lyon seem to have already made their move to replace Cornet after signing Emerson Palmieri on loan from Chelsea last week.
Ex France youth star could bring new dimension to West Ham
Cornet played for every France side at youth level right up to Under 21s.
But the reported West Ham target switched allegiance to the country of his birth and has made 21 appearances for Ivory Coast, scoring four goals.
Cornet started life as a midfielder – and an attacking one at that.
But he was used a left-back during a Lyon injury crisis and cemented his place there ever since.
He has scored an impressive 56 goals in just over 270 career games for club and country so far.
Masuaku issues and jam-packed campaign mean move for Cornet makes perfect sense
Indeed one of those came in a Champions League quarter-final win over Manchester City two seasons ago.
With Arthur Masuaku’s injury issues and lingering doubts over his ability to defend when operating as a left-back, it is easy to see why Moyes would be keen to bring Cornet to West Ham.
West Ham have a week to get signings over the line ahead of a jam-packed season with European football in the mix.
Thus far goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is the only new arrival this summer. But Moyes is desperately trying to get Kurt Zouma signed. And he also needs an attacker who can fill in up front for Michail Antonio.
