West Ham United boss David Moyes says he does not have to convince David Sullivan over signings ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
Thus far the only new arrival at West Ham this summer is goalkeeper Alphonse Areola on loan.
Kurt Zouma looks set to sign in a £25 million deal from Chelsea but with a jam-packed European campaign ahead, Moyes and West Ham fans know he needs more strength in depth.
Many West Ham fans have taken the lack of transfer business out on co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold.
Speculation Moyes may be struggling to convince de factor DOF Sullivan that he needs certain players
Sullivan is West Ham’s de facto director of football and while Moyes has complete control of signings and recruitment, it is the co-owner who negotiates to try and get deals done.
There had been talk that one of the reasons for the delay in signing Moyes’s prime target Zouma, was Sullivan’s reluctance to make him the club’s highest earner on a reported £120k per week.
West Ham fans have been suspicious of sudden claims that the club are concerned about a five year old knee injury which left the deal hanging in the balance.
Moyes insists he does not need to persuade owners over signings before deadline
Others have suggested the lack of transfer activity might be the result of West Ham’s hierarchy feeling Moyes and his squad are doing perfectly well as things are and therefore do not need reinforcements.
But when Moyes was asked by reporters in his pre-Crystal Palace press conference whether he felt he had to convince the owners over signings ahead of the deadline he was adamant that is not the case.
“Oh I’ve got no problem with the persuasion to the club (that I need signings) because they know exactly that we would like to add to the squad,” Moyes said in his pre-match press conference (whufc.com – 8mins 30secs).
‘We know we need to add and the club certainly do too’
“This time last year we had Fabian Balbuena (then) we had Jesse Lingard here, so at the moment we’re sort of two players down from the squad we finished last season with.
“So we know that we have to add to that, and the club certainly do.
“But trying to find the right ones, and trying to add to level of players we have at the club – and we want players who are going to come in and be competitive with the ones we’ve got – has not been quite as easy to get.
“But I hope we can. There’s a few days to go so I hope we can add to it.”
