West Ham boss David Moyes wanted to sell Fabian Balbuena in the summer according to Football.London.
Keeping him at the London Stadium is now looking like an absolutely masterstroke from the Scot, however.
The 29-year-old centre-back seemed as though he had no future at West Ham after an incredibly poor 2019/20 campaign.
He was given another chance to impress, however, when Issa Diop was ruled out for two weeks due to a positive Covid test back in September.
And Balbeuna hasn’t looked back. The 15-capped Paraguay international has been an absolute rock at the back for the Hammers and has played a key role in our recent resurgence.
The 29-year-old has played seven games for West Ham this season. In those outings, he has racked up 10 tackles, 15 interceptions, 38 clearances and 38 ball recoveries. He has also won 24 individual duels and 12 aerial battles (premierleague.com).
Balbeuna is not the quickest of defenders by any means. His reading of the game and anticipation of danger has been first class, however.
Thank God David Moyes never sold him. In all honestly, the Scot’s hand was forced back in September with Diop missing two weeks of action. Credit to Moyes for sticking with Balbuena, however,
The General now seems like he is back to his best. And West Ham are certainly look like a better team because of it.
