Speaking to The Evening Standard, Moyes has revealed his former Everton stars John Heitinga and Steven Pienaar – who both also played for Ajax – were just as important to West Ham signing Kudus and Alvarez from the Dutch giants as Steidten.

Moyes has since appointed Heitinga – who was interim boss at Ajax last season – as his assistant at West Ham.

His input alongside that of Pienaar, who was Ajax youth team manager until this summer, was crucial to the deals claims Moyes.

‘I had some meetings… I phoned him too’

“I met Johnny in the summer a couple of times before I brought him in,” Moyes told The Evening Standard.

“I’d had some meetings him but I was also asking him about the Ajax players and what might be there.

“I didn’t know I was going to end up getting them because they were two lads on our list of recruitment…

“But I was able to talk to Johnny about Edson and then Mo when he started to become a consideration (for the job at West Ham).

“Steven Pienaar has been at Ajax as well and he was one of my ex-players (at Everton) so I phoned him about them too.”
