West Ham United may have been handed a boost in their attempts to retain Konstantinos Mavropanos with Borussia Dortmund reportedly set to seal a £17 million move for another centre-back target.

It was reported last month that Mavropanos had emerged as a target for the Bundesliga giants ahead of the summer transfer window.

Dortmund need to replace the experienced Niklas Sule, who is leaving the Signal Iduna Park when his contract expires in July. And Konstantinos Mavropanos, who enjoyed three excellent years with VFB Stuttgart, had reportedly been identified as a readymade successor with only two years left on his West Ham United deal.

TRUE or FALSE? Dinos Mavropanos has been West Ham’s BEST player in 2026 🔥

But in a development which could signal the end of Dortmund’s interest in the 28-year-old Greek international, Sky Germany are claiming that the one-time European Champions are now ‘on the verge’ of signing another centre-half; Joane Gadou of Red Bull Salzburg.

Dortmund may be out the running for West Ham United’s Dinos Mavropanos

Sky report that Dortmund have a long-term contract nailed down with Gadou. Negotiations are ‘nearing completion’, with a medical expected in the near future.

Gadou, a graduate of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, is only 19 years of age. It remains to be seen if Dortmund plan to add another, more experienced centre-back to the ranks as well.

But having tied the much-coveted Nico Schlotterbeck down to a new contract, West Ham will be hoping that the idea of bringing Mavropanos back to Germany is now very firmly on the backburner.

When asked about the speculation in April, Nuno Espirito Santo hailed Mavropanos’ professionalism and focus in the midst of much uncertainty.

“In the summer [we will see what happens]. But now, we don’t think about anything else other than our tasks in the game,” Nuno said. “Dinos is focused and committed, for sure.”

Hammers News have also been told that West Ham are remaining calm regarding the future of a man they could still look to tie down to a new, improved contract.

“We are calm about the Mavropanos speculation,” a top West Ham spokesman exclusively told Hammers News in April. “This is standard practice when players are discussing new contracts and terms and often used by intermediaries to force the club’s hand on certain things.

“Everyone at the club is delighted by Mavropanos’ turnaround, not least because he is such a popular guy in the dressing room and has found it tough to establish himself since signing.

“But we are calm and would question where the information is coming from given a key contact left the club some time ago now.”
