Big twist as £25.4m West Ham transfer claim means pressure ramps up on Tim Steidten

Tim Steidten hasn’t achieved what we all thought he would since becoming West Ham United director of football in July 2023.

West Ham brought in Tim Steidten from Bayer Leverkusen 18 months ago after his terrific work with the Bundesliga club.

However, it has to be said, Steidten has seriously underwhelmed in his role with the Hammers.

His failures have shone the microscope on his work at the London Stadium, with a recent claim suggesting that he could soon follow Julen Lopetegui out the door.

I wouldn’t have a problem with that one little bit. Some of the signings he has made have been horrendous – namely Konstantinos Mavropanos and Niclas Fullkrug.

They call him the ‘pearl-diver’, but he has only signed either well-known players or has-beens for us so far it seems.

Steidten has allegedly become unpopular behind the scenes at West Ham as well.

I believe he has to go, especially with recruitment guru Kyle Macaulay set to join Graham Potter at West Ham, after the club agreed to pay compensation to Chelsea.

As if Steidten wasn’t under enough scrutiny already, the latest news regarding a failed transfer will pile the pressure on him even more.

The German is a man under the microscope at the London Stadium right now.

In my opinion, the only really successful signing he has overseen was Mohammed Kudus.

And let’s be honest here, the 24-year-old was hardly an undiscovered gem when Steidten brought him to the London Stadium was he!

However, there is one signing the German made in the summer that really takes the biscuit when it comes to sheer peculiarity.

Sean Whetstone took to his X account to share some news regarding Luis Guilherme.

And it seems like the Brazilian could well be set to stay at the London Stadium this month after all.

It was initially claimed that the Hammers were prepared to sell the 18-year-old winger for just £15 million in January.

However, West Ham have obviously got a bit more greedy, in the belief that clubs from Saudi would be prepared to splash out a significant fee on the young Brazilian.

Guilherme arrived at the London Stadium in the summer, after the Hammers paid Palmeiras a £25 million fee for the teenager.

That now looks like really poor business from West Ham though.

Luis Guilherme a strange signing by Tim Steidten from the get-go

When the teenager joined the Hammers in the summer for such a large fee, the fans naturally thought we had secured a future star.

However, he has only played 50 minutes minutes for the first-team so far this season.

And if we’re being honest, he has looked miles off the pace every time he’s taken to the pitch.

The most infuriating thing for me about the Luis Guilherme deal is that the £25 million we paid Palmeiras for his signature could have been used elsewhere.

We were crying out for a young striker with explosive pace – could that money not have been added to the fee we offered Aston Villa for Jhon Duran?

Or what about a powerful, ball-carrying box-to-box midfielder? Someone like Youssouf Fofana for example.

Tim Steidten has failed in his role as director of football at West Ham as far as I’m concerned.

The deal to sign Luis Guilherme should be enough to warrant a big demotion for the German at the very lesst.

I would prefer it if the club parted ways with Steidten though, and started a fresh from now.
