The mighty Barcelona have proved West Ham United made the wrong choice again last summer.
West Ham splashed a club record £45million on Sebastien Haller (BBC Sport).
But the French forward has struggled to replicate his Bundesliga form in the fiercely competitive Premier League.
Some West Ham fans argue much of that is to do with the fact the club’s poor recruitment left Haller playing an unfamiliar lone striker role. His best form had always come as the second striker in a two-man forward line.
Haller’s Hammer struggles in debut season
But still seven goals from some 30 games in all competitions is not a satisfactory return. And he has disappointed just as many fans with his workrate, desire and effort at times.
Now Barcelona have proved West Ham chose the wrong French striker last summer.
According to German newspaper Bild, Barca are pushing to sign two-time West Ham target Alassane Plea in the next window.
The report claims that the Spanish La Liga giants would potentially be willing to pay £45 million to sign Plea.
And West Ham could have signed the same player for nearly half the price.
The Hammers have been linked with the rapid striker on three separate occasions in the past.
Back in 2o16 West Ham reportedly wanted Plea, who was valued at £25m by Nice (Le10Sport).
The then 23-year-old scored 45 goals in 135 games for Nice.
At that time the Hammers put all their eggs in the Alexandre Lacazette and Michy Batshuayi basket but they ended up moving to London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea instead.
West Ham were again linked with Plea in the summer 2o18 when Manuel Pellegrini took over (The Sun).
Again they baulked at the £25million price tag.
Barca prove West Ham made wrong choice, now Moyes must fix it
Borussia Monchengladbach did not, though, and bagged Plea for around £20million.
He has gone on to score 23 goals in 55 games for the German side and received his first France call-up.
Last summer when West Ham were looking to spend their £45million first on Maxi Gomez and then on an alternative, Plea’s name entered the frame again.
Speculation on social media suggested West Ham might try again for Plea.
But they opted for his compatriot Haller instead.
Now Barcelona’s interest is proof the Hammers made the wrong call.
Plea possesses exactly what West Ham needed more of, pace. But he is also strong and good in the air too.
He is the kind of all rounder West Ham needed to replace someone like Marko Arnautovic, who had a bit of everything.
Bild claim Barca will complete a move for the same price West Ham paid Eintracht Frankfurt for Haller.
That proves the money would have been enough to tempt Monchengladbach to sell up.
Now all David Moyes can do is keep West Ham up and hope Haller comes good in a system more suited to his style next season.
