West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville may be a long-time target of Liverpool’s, but what does the sudden sacking of Arne Slot mean for his immediate future?

In a week when West Ham confirmed that Nuno Espirito Santo would be staying to help the club bounce back from relegation, Arne Slot’s backside was burned by the scalding Liverpool hotseat.

Liverpool sacked their head coach on Saturday. Andoni Iraola, fresh from taking AFC Bournemouth into the Europa League for the very first time, is the leading candidate to replace him.

A penny for Crysencio Summerville’s thoughts, then.

It is no secret that Summerville will leave the London Stadium following an end to West Ham United’s 14-year stay in the Premier League.

When it looked as if Slot was staying, despite a miserable title defence, the stars appeared to be aligning for a coach who has never hidden his desire to work with the Feyenoord academy graduate.

Arne Slot is a huge fan of West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville

When Slot was still at the helm of the Rotterdam giants, he confirmed that he wanted to bring Summerville back to De Kuip from Leeds United. At the time, he was simply too expensive.

“We have not been able to find a player who strengthens us in attack and who was feasible for us,” Slot told Voetbal Zone only months before he was confirmed as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at Liverpool. “Otherwise, he would have been there.

“It is not difficult to find such a player [with the qualities we want]. However, it must also fit within our financial possibilities. A player must want to come to us and have the will to play in the Eredivisie.

A summer of sales looms! Who will you miss the most? 🫩

“I’ll just mention a name so you can write about it again; I would have liked to see Summerville on our side. But he is too expensive. I have found him an interesting player for a long time.”

This summer – following a poor season from Cody Gakpo on the left-hand side of Liverpool’s attack and particularly after West Ham finished on the wrong side of the dotted line – Summerville felt both attainable and affordable for the man who secured the Merseyside giants’ a second Premier League title in 2025.

Now, though, it will be interesting to see if Slot’s replacement – presumably Iraola – shares the same admiration for a winger who enjoyed a much-improved, if mixed, campaign in East London.
