West Ham have announced that striker Lucas Perez has left the club. Perez has left to join La Liga outfit Deportivo Alaves for an undisclosed fee.
The Spanish striker only joined West Ham last summer, moving from Arsenal for a cut-price fee. He scored six times in 19 games for the Hammers but struggled to get a run of games under his belt.
With Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez sharing the striker responsibilities, Perez was mainly used as a substitute. And he was even omitted from the matchday squad on a number of occasions.
For the sake of his career, the 30-year-old has left England and returned to his homeland. Alaves finished in 11th place last season and Perez will be replacing ex-Hammers flop Jonathan Calleri there.
Lucas Perez and Guillermo Maripan swap?
Some West Ham fans believe West Ham’s business with Alaves could be a sweetener. The Irons have been strongly linked with Alaves defender Guillermo Maripan. According to various media outlets (including Mundo Deportivo), West Ham have bid for the Chilean centre-back.
And perhaps the sale of Perez could preempt Maripan’s move to East London. Here are some tweets from West Ham fans discussing Perez’s departure.

Supposedly about 2.5m for him, but apparently it was mainly to sweeten a deal for Maripan, their CB who we’re after
