New York Red Bulls fans were livid with Aaron Long for his poor performance yesterday. Long, who was linked with a move to West Ham in the summer, was part of a side that shipped four goals.
During the summer, West Ham were hoping to sign a new central defender. According to Sky Sports News, the Hammers were trying to sort a work permit for Long with the player desperate to move to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old had recently impressed in the Gold Cup and was heavily tipped for a move to Europe. But the work permit issue was a major stumbling block and it proved decisive as the transfer deadline neared.
Goncalo Cardoso over Aaron Long
Eventually, West Ham gave up on the USA international. Instead, they signed Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista. Consequently, Long stayed with New York Red Bulls in the MLS.
But he had a shocker against Los Angeles FC. New York suffered a heavy 4-2 loss away from home. And fans of the Red Bulls flocked to Twitter to blast Long for his performance.
Here are some tweets from New York Red Bulls fans discussing West Ham target Long’s performance against LAFC.
Long, who could have been sold for a reasonable $4M to several European clubs just a week ago and is now magically worth 15M to #RBNY has been the worst Bull on the pitch since the rumors heated up 3 weeks ago. He’s gotten burned several times tonight alone. #MLS

Not selling Aaron Long when they had the chance was stupid, now they won’t ever get anywhere near that number again lol #RBNY

Aaron Long thinking he can play overseas LOL

#RBNY have a startling lack of leadership. Armas is completely unfit to manage this team, Robles is a poor captain, and other guys like Davis and Long have failed to step up to fill the void.
