West Ham have stepped up their hunt for a new centre-back. According to Mundo Deportivo, West Ham have made an €11.5m (roughly £10m) bid for Deportivo Alaves defender Guillermo Maripan.
The Hammers are well-positioned to get this deal over the line. Currently, West Ham’s bid falls short of Maripan’s €23m (just over £20m) release clause. But Alaves are mulling over this offer and West Ham could get him for £10m.
Maripan wants to move to the Premier League so this transfer will appeal to him. The Chile international has the chance to team up with fellow countryman Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham.
Guillermo Maripan to complete centre-back department?
West Ham want one more central defender this summer. Pellegrini is considering his options to complete his centre-back department and Maripan is the top target.
At the moment, Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop are the two first-choice options. Angelo Ogbonna provides the Irons with a solid and experienced back-up option.
However, Winston Reid has been out since March 2018 and there are doubts over his future. Reece Oxford spent last season on loan at Augsburg and could leave permanently.
This opens the door for Maripan to complete his West Ham switch. The 25-year-old stands at 6ft 4in tall and was one of Alaves’ top performers last season.
