Javier Hernandez has left West Ham to link up with Sevilla for a fee believed to be worth £7.2 million, according to the Sun.
The 31-year-old joined the Hammers from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017, for a fee thought to be worth £16 million, according to Sky Sports.
He failed to have the impact that was expected of him at the London Stadium, however.
Hernandez has scored just 17 goals in 63 appearances for West Ham.
And considering the fact that he had just 10 months remaining on his deal with the Hammers, moving him on now for £7.2 million must be considered as good value for money for the east London outfit.
The Mexico international was also on an extortionate salary. He earned £145,000 per week, according to Claret and Hugh.
So getting those wages off the books will boost the Hammers’ chances of attracting top class players in January or next summer.
Hernandez is undoubtedly on the downward curve of his career, so moving him on for any kind of fee would have been the right thing to do for West Ham.
The only problem for the Hammers is that they are now rather short in the attacking department.
Manuel Pellegrini will have to rely on Sebastien Haller and Albian Ajeti.
Another positive from Hernandez’s sale, however, is that Xande Silva will now be promoted to Pellegrini’s third choice striker.
It might seem like a risky move from West Ham, but it would have been even more risky to turn down £7.2 million for a 31-year-old on huge wages who is out of contract next summer.
