Four homegrown midfielders West Ham should target on deadline day

The transfer deadline is fast approaching and just a few hours remain. From 5 PM today, West Ham and other Premier League clubs will not be able to sign new players.

West Ham have made six signings this summer but ideally, the club still need a defensive midfielder. However, the Hammers have reached their quota of overseas players and will need to look at a homegrown player.

Here are four options that West Ham could consider, although given the limited budget and short notice, some of these might be optimistic.

Nathaniel Chalobah

Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is an undoubted talent. The 24-year-old has been dogged with injuries but needs a good run in a team to get to his best.

West Ham should look at the once-capped England international, who is at the right age and can also play at centre-back.

Last season, Arsenal loaned Calum Chambers to Fulham. Despite the Cottagers’ relegation, Chambers was a revelation. The 24-year-old was transformed from a centre-back into a central midfielder.

Like Chalobah, Chambers is appealing as he can also play at centre-back, as well as providing an option at right-back. The 3-cap England starlet might be available on loan if David Luiz signs.

Isaac Hayden

West Ham have held an interest in Isaac Hayden this summer and he could be an ideal target. The 24-year-old was one of Newcastle’s most consistent players last term, operating in a holding midfield role.

Formerly of Arsenal, Hayden wants to move down south because he is too far from his family at Newcastle. Born in Chelmsford, West Ham is surely the ideal location for Hayden.

Olivier Ntcham

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham wants to leave and move to a top European league. The France youth international is not English but counts as homegrown as he came through Manchester City’s academy.

Ntcham is a box-to-box midfielder who has proven his worth in the Scottish Premiership. The 23-year-old is now at the right age to return to England and thrive.
