£15.8m West Ham bid accused of causing ’embarrassment’ with target’s head ‘elsewhere’

A warning to one of the rising talents of Serie A; After links with West Ham United, Juventus, Inter Milan and co went into overdrive last week, this is the sort of scrutiny you can expect from here on in.

Up until Sunday’s trip to the Stadio Olimpico, the 20-year-old central defender had been content to go about his business somewhat quietly, and extremely effectively, away from the limelight.

It would be a stretch to suggest that one report has changed all this – Tiago Gabriel’s name has been appearing in the media with growing frequency since the start of the season, after all – but the feeling over in Lecce is that a sudden swell in speculation has had quite the toll on the Portugal Under-21 international.

West Ham reportedly lodged a £15.8 million bid for Tiago Gabriel earlier this month. While those claims are yet to be corroborated closer to home, Gazzetta dello Sport certainly seem convinced that an ‘official offer’ has arrived from the London Stadium.

Juventus reportedly opened talks with Tiago Gabriel’s representatives as well. Director Pantaleo Corvino has also confirmed the existence of some big-money bids, albeit stopping short of saying whether or not one of those arrived from the English capital.

It may be no coincidence, then, that Tiago Gabriel’s most difficult afternoon of the 2025/26 Serie A season came when the lights were just that little bit more glaring.

Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel has a day to forget after reported West Ham United bid

Tiago Gabriel was likened to Ricardo Carvalho by Filipe Martins, his former coach at Estrela de Amadora a few days ago [Tutto Juve].

This, though, was not a moment particularly reminiscent of the Portugal icon in his Chelsea pomp.

As the ball broke loose on a Lazio attack, Tiago Gabriel could not sort his feet out quickly enough, a heavy touch taking it back towards his own goal. He was then nudged to ground in the penalty area by Boulaye Dia, the Lazio forward converting coolly.

While his Lecce teammates threw up their arms and demanded VAR intervention, Tiago Gabriel wore the sheepish impression of a man who had simply been out-muscled.

Which position do West Ham need to strengthen the most and why? Who is your dream January signing?

“[His] mind is elsewhere,” a less-than impressed Calcio Lecce suggested, handing Tiago Gabriel a match rating of just 4.5/10.

“We can already hear the first fans blaming transfer market commentators for the young Portuguese’s poor performance. And if we didn’t know the dynamics of professional football, we’d have to agree with them.

“These are mistakes he must learn from, because overconfidence can lead to repeated embarrassments.”

Portugal U21 ace Tiago Gabriel may be an upgrade on Max Kilman

This was the first real setback in the Sporting Lisbon graduate’s otherwise brilliant, breakout campaign. With his 6ft 4ins frame and his formidable aerial presence, Tiago Gabriel could be the Craig Dawson replacement West Ham fans have been crying out for.

With every duel Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo lose – the latter ranked second-worst centre-back across the whole of the Premier League going into matchday 12 for aerial duels – the clamour for a more imposing, proactive central defender grows.

Reporter Fabio Caressa feels that any criticism of Tiago Gabriel should be tempered by the fact that goalscorer Dia, no matter how small the contact may have been, still got slightly lucky. Lecce had seen a goal ruled out at the other end, after all, after a similar nudge was deemed a foul by VAR.

For Caressa, if one goal is given, so should both. And vice versa.

“The foul was on Tiago Gabriel, who did something unwatchable, but Dia actually pushed him,” Caressa told Sky Italia. “From a VAR perspective, I don’t see the difference [between the two incidents].

“There’s still confusion.”

Charlie Cresswell and Alexsandro talks have taken place

Hammers News can confirm that West Ham are in discussions regarding Charlie Cresswell, too, with the January window only a month away. The former Leeds youngster was a target over the summer, and is back in contention now.

West Ham were optimistic about signing Alexsandro of Lille, too, when initial discussions took place in October. The Brazil international has calmed the fears which arose following a quadriceps injury, too.

And while Lecce claim to have no plans of selling Tiago Gabriel, director Pantaleo Corvino said something very similar when the Serie A outfit sold Patrick Dorgu to Manchester United ten months ago.

“A club like ours must work on [Tiago Gabriel’s] potential. Many people like him, not just Juventus,” Corvino told Tuttosport.

“The boy is strong. We’ve been patient and lucky [with his development]. But be careful, he’s staying here for this year. He’s too important a player to [lose if we want to] achieve our goal.

“We mustn’t lose sight of him.”
