Konstantinos Mavropanos clearly meant every word of his first ever message to West Ham fans

West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was brilliant in their draw with Manchester City on Saturday night, although that perhaps should not be a surprise.

For all the talk of Axel Disasi improving West Ham United’s defence, the rapid-fire improvements that both Mavropanos and Jean-Clair Todibo have made in recent weeks cannot be overlooked.

Mavropanos' performance is the best by a West Ham defender since… ?

Indeed, the Greek hasn’t always been the most convincing of defenders since he joined the club from Stuttgart in the summer of 2023.

However, the 28-year-old has been one of the pillars upon which Nuno Espirito Santo has built his recent defensive success.

On Saturday, Mavropanos put in a brilliant performance for West Ham against Man City and the image of him taking an Erling Haaland volley right to the face will live long in the memory.

This is a player willing to put his body on the line for the cause and it prompted Hammers News to look back on his opening message to the club’s supporters.

Mavropanos promised to “give everything” for West Ham

Following his arrival, the defender spoke to West Ham’s official website in August 2023.

He vowed to “give everything” for the club’s shirt and, clearly, he meant every word.

In his first interview, he said: “I can promise the fans I will give everything for them and the shirt.”

Good idea or is all hope for an atmosphere lost anyway?

Mavropanos has been excellent in recent weeks, but it was his performance against City and that block from Haaland that brought his name into even sharper focus.

They weren’t just hollow words. Mavropanos, along with the rest of his defensive teammates, is doing all he can to ensure the Hammers remain a Premier League team come May.

In Todibo, Disasi and Mavropanos, West Ham United boast a backline that teams should envy.

Surprisingly, it is that defensive solidity that could yet keep them up this season, and not many would have said that a few weeks ago.
