West Ham supporters will be hoping for similar heroics this season as in the 2006/07 campaign.

Hammers fans over 30 years old will remember the ‘Great Escape’ from Premier League relegation under Alan Curbishley.

Curbishley’s side looked destined for the Championship before winning seven of their last nine games to stay up.

The dramatic run-in even culminated with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final day.

Hammers News looks back on Curbishley and ex-chairman Eggert Magnusson’s comments after survival was confirmed.

Alan Curbishley and Eggert Magnusson’s reaction to West Ham’s Premier League survival

Curbishley was the mastermind behind West Ham’s escape from relegation, having replaced Alan Pardew in December.

The former Hammers midfielder did not inspire an initial ‘new manager bounce’, but he performed miracles in the final nine games.

Seven wins from nine helped West Ham to a 15th-place finish, three points clear of Sheffield United in 18th.

After completing the ‘Great Escape’ with a victory over Man Utd, Curbishley admitted that it was far from an enjoyable experience.

He told BBC Sport: “I hope I never have to go through it again, and I hope West Ham never have to go through it again.”

Then-West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson had a completely different reaction. “I feel such joy and pride…” he said.

“To have won seven games out of nine is a genuine achievement and should not be forgotten as people reflect on the Premiership season.

“We have shown this is a club with a great fighting spirit and a group of players who know how to win.

“Now we can look ahead to moving forward as a club and building on what we have achieved this season.”

The momentum from the ‘Great Escape’ carried into the following season, as West Ham finished in the top half of the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche’s Everton comfortably avoided relegation in the 2023/24 season despite an eight-point deduction.
